There are over 450 scholarships international students can apply for in Japan yearly. These scholarships make provisions for a monthly stipend which is about $1500 on average which comes with accommodation charges travel allowances, tuition fees, and health insurance. Some scholarships on the other hand, only take cares care of the tuition fee.

Fully Funded Japanese Scholarships

MEXT SCHOLARSHIP: This is a fully funded scholarship that is awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, sports, culture as well as Science and Technology. This implies that international students who have been awarded this scholarship don’t just have their tuition fees taken care of but they also have their survival expenses and even round air trip ticket taken care of.

This scholarship is open to students applying for undergraduate, Master, Ph.D., and training-related levels of study.   2. Monbukagakusho  Honors Scholarship which is for international students with private funding for survival expenses in the country.

Eligibility for this scholarship for international students is to perform excellently well in the Japanese university admission examination (EJU). It is during the application process that you will specify that you need this kind of scholarship.

NIG POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP: This fellowship fully funds scholarships for international students. From the very date of hire, students get paid yearly and it stretches to three years which is the employment duration. The salary paid by the fellowship is about 4,000000 JPY which is inclusive of tax payments, conditional commuting allowance, compensation insurance, and mutual society if health insurance

LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE ORGANIZATION SCHOLARSHIP: As the name implies, this scholarship is funded by the local government and other exchange organizations from these intending student’s university region. This scholarship funding is between ¥2000 to ¥8000 in a month.

JOINT JAPAN WORLD BANK GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP: This is a fully funded scholarship for international students looking to do their master’s program in Japan. JJ/WBGSP covers accommodation and economy class travel with a monthly stipend alongside the tuition fee.
